The End Of The Beginning

Ok so I am just about 24 hours removed from the start of my last university exam for this term. I am without a doubt a total bundle of nerves right now but I've faith in the knowledge I am prepared as best I can be, now the rest is up to what I am capable of on the day.

However I think it's time I take this moment right now to reflect upon how I've grown these last four and a half months not only in knowledge but in maturity as well. Four and a half months ago, I was very emotionally immature, I would not accept the responsibility for my decisions. I would focus too much so on the outcome of any given situation I was in, rather then as I am now where I focus on the processes involved in obtaining the outcome that is most desirable for me.

I've learnt much to my mother's great surprise to do my own washing and on the very rare occasion my own ironing. I've learnt to become a lot more independant person and a lot more emotionally mature.

I don't view the end of this semester as the end of the first semester of study, I am taking the view it is the end of the beginning of something altogether entirely different, and I am greatly looking forward to that journey and the awesome summer I have lined up!

Racing Photos

Here are some recent photos from a great race with the rockhampton cycling club I did at glendale! The event was well run and an absolute blast to be involved with. I am greatly looking forward to my first full road season with the rockhampton cycling club next year, in 2012!! All photos are provided courtesy of Bronwyn Ferguson Photography.

The Sweetest Thing

There comes a time in man's life where he is ready to openly admit that he is totally in love with someone, totally ready to say to the world who it is that he loves without fear of consequence or reproach. For me that time has now come. First, before I reveal the person who I have fallen for in such a way, I am willing to offer my view on the difference between love and that ever deadly sin lust.

When you lust after someone, it is often a hollow feeling, it is wanting something so badly that when you finally get it you feel hollow inside as you probably don't know what to do with it. Lust is often when we are merely just physically attracted to a person, with little emotional and intellectual basis or foundation for this physical attraction to grow and expand upon. Whilst many argue that lust is what all love is first, I would argue that love and lust are simply separate entities, and that they always have been.

When your in love with someone it's very hard to describe to other people what you feel. I think it is something very few people if any can tell you that you are, it is something that you just know inside that you are indeed in love. To me being in love, particularly with  the girl I have fallen in love with, makes all the hard training rides, races where I smash myself to my physical limit, all the long hours and nights spent at the desk studying, all the long hours spent at the coffee shop or sleeping, it is what makes all these things totally and utterly worth it.

Simply because I know I will have someone there for me to take away all the hurt all the suffering, all the tiredness and exhaustion, I will have someone there who simply understands me at the most basic level, someone there who will appreciate me for who I am and what I want to be, not who they want me to be or what they me want to be. Thats what it all means to me.

BAM! New Layout! Tons of New Stuff On The Way!

OK! So I'm a slackass in updating my blog - What else is new? While I work on some new stuff, such as taking tons of photos to upload onto this blog - to show you awesome readers the important people in my life - I'm going to start regularly blogging at least twice a week from now on! That's right more awesome for you to look forward to!

This is probably helped by the fact I will finish out my first semester of university level studies, so I'll be back in Brisbane for four months. I AM SO AMAZINGLY PUMPED FOR THIS! I'll be having some amazing adventures over the summer as well as hanging out with friends, working, racing, training and just generally maxing out the living of my life!

The reason for this new attitude is simple. LIFE IS TO SHORT SO MAKE EACH DAY COUNT!

So enjoy the new layout and look forward to the raft of changes coming to a computer near you, very, very soon.

Champagne Studying?

Man I love september its the footy finals for both codes, as well as the road world championships. During september the term "Champagne Football" gets thrown around quite often, it's often used in reference to a team playing an attractive style of football likely to win that team the premiership. However for us uni students I would like to coin the term "Champagne Studying"

I hate this time of year personally though, simply because assignments become due, exam revision kicks into gear, my stress levels sky-rocket, my time on a bike drops rapidly and my nutrition turns to things that it just shouldn't. As I write this blog I am roughly three and a half weeks away from returning home to Brisbane for the summer. Words cannot express how utterly pumped I am for this. New house to return to, a potential job and a great summer of training all lie ahead of me.

All this excitement towards the future and what may lie ahead is doing quite a good job of helping me see past the task at hand, which is arguably a much more important, great and more difficult task then my goings on over the summer. The task at hand simply put is assessment, lots of it. In the next three and a half weeks across my four subjects I'll write two 2000 word assignments and sit three exams. All of which bar one exam will more the likely have a huge bearing on my results for this semester. So as these weeks draw to a close I thought it might be a good idea to run through in my view the trait and attributes as well as tricks that come in hand when returning to my original topic of "Champagne Studying" the more astute readers of mine will have now roughly figured out that I am referring to study habits likely to net the maximum results possible when it comes to the September crunch time.

GET OFF THE SOCIAL MEDIA
This is probably the most important piece of advice I can offer, I know many who get friends to change passwords, delete accounts and so forth. The simple fact of the matter is these social networking and media tools are greatly distracting, highly addictive and largely time consuming. GET OFF THEM! It's two, three weeks with out it tops, you won't die. In all probability you will find the change refreshing like I am.

CLEAN YOUR SHIT UP!
One great piece of advice I once heard from a friend is a cluttered desk indicates a cluttered mind. This I think is very true if your study space is cluttered, I think so will your approach to study be cluttered and messy. Also no-one enjoys sitting at a flithy desk to work at for long periods of time. So quite simply CLEAN IT! You will be amazed at the difference this can make.

WORK IT OUT
Have you ever been so stressed you feel you could just run from it all? Well if your at that point, or feel yourself getting close to that point then chances are that you need to GO FOR A RUN! I'm not exactly sure how this works, however I've always found it easier to study after a hard workout be it a run or ride or whatever. You feel better about yourself, have released some negative energy that is associated with stress and will also have cleared your mind. Perfect state to be in for study.

TAKE A BREAK
This is a no-brainer but often neglected by even the most veteran students. You should ideally be taking a quick 5-10 minute break from study every hour to 90 minutes, simply because no-one can concentrate for ever breaks help us freshen up, and allow us a chance to refocus. The other big benefit of taking a break is it will allow you to not get bored and do something else other then study.

MAKE IT COUNT
You can study when your in the mood or study between set hours either approach I've found and seen works just as well. The difference between the two is minimal. Whenever you sit down to study however you need to say yourself "I am going to rock this for the next however long and produce my best work". It's all about the quality of your work not the quantity of it.

So there are some simple tips to "Champagne Studying" little things that anyone can easily implement and should already know. I wish all uni students good-luck over the next few weeks and months as assessment slowly takes over our lives.

Distractions and Changes

Ok so some of you may be asking me where I've been. Well I could say that I've been busy with my university studies and haven't had time to blog much. I would only be telling part of the truth. I could say I've been too tired from training and racing this would most definitely be lying, I've barely touched a bike in the time I've been up here. I could say I've been spending time with my totally amazing and unreal girlfriend...I would also be definitely lying.

So where have I been? The answer is simple I've been on Facebook.

Wasting time and seeing myself distracted from the youth of my life passing me by...whilst I sat constantly checking into wherever I was, constantly updating my status, constantly being distracted from the more important things in my life.

After doing some extensive soul searching, I took the choice to change, I've removed Facebook from my life. No longer will I waste time procrastinating from my studies on Facebook. No longer will I stay home from my rides to check in somewhere cute. No longer will I be distracted from my loved ones. No longer will I be distracted from life.

What you can expect now is me to update this blog with my goings, comings and inbetweenings. With tons of pictures, links to anything relevant to whatever I am writing about that day, and plenty of links and videos to anything not relevant. You can expect reviews of things that I use, you can expect a better bigger improved blog. You can also expect a total life change, I am going to get back down to a respectable weight, I am going to eat healthier. I am going to rededicate myself to my studies. I am going to train and race harder and smarter then ever before. I am going to spend more time with the people I love.

Get ready for the future
